ACTIVITIES

Child Playing

Parenting ability is a unique, individual process based on the experience and resources of the parent. We have a holistic and bespoke approach to foster positive parenting according to needs and will include a range of activities to help support learning.  In addition to any other issues identified in the placement agreement, this will cover the following areas:

  • Attachment and Bonding/Emotional Warmth

  • Behaviour Management/Setting Boundaries

  • A knowledge of Child Development

  • Basic Care

  • Safety

  • Health and Hygiene

  • Domestic Violence

  • Substance abuse

Personal Development

Area of work will explore the parent’s ability to balance their own interests, leisure activities, education, employment etc., with the needs of their child(ren) considering:

  • Protection and awareness

  • Anger management

  • Domestic abuse

  • Loss and bereavement

  • Self-esteem and confidence building

  • Relationship/mediation work

It is important to look at extended family, friends, partners and how they influence the way the parent looks after their child(ren) and how the parent(s) can create a safe and secure environment for their child(ren).

Activities in the Community

Birmingham is a thriving city, and we are fortunate to have access to a plethora of centres locally which offer a range of parent/child groups. Parents will be provided with information about these groups on their arrival and support then in finding the best fit for them and their child. We encourage the parent to attend regular groups throughout their placement, in addition to undertaking child focused activities in the community such as soft play centres, swimming and parks.

Psychological and/or Psychiatric Intervention/Assessment

These are agreed at the initial placement meeting. As well as our in-house groups, we also encourage parents to attend certain locally run courses and sessions.  Children are cared for by staff whilst their parents undertake any sessions unsuitable for the child to be present.
